1. What masters did you take? And where?

Data Science and Society (Media track) at Tilburg University.

2. Were there any admission requirements?

That depends on the studies you did before. I myself took the bachelor’s in Communication and Information Sciences and was able to move on to the master in no time. However, it was only possible for me to follow the Media Track. For the other tracks (Governance, Business and Health) other prior education is required. If you have come from HBO or if your studies do not meet the requirements, it is also possible to first follow the premaster.

 3. Why did you chose this master?

I chose this master because during the bachelor I especially found the programming and analysis subjects interesting. Because of this, I also chose to take Data Science and CSAI courses during my minor. Since high school I had been more interested in mathematical subjects, but because I wanted to go to university after graduating from college, it was difficult to get into an economics program. By first taking the bachelor Communication and Information Sciences, I managed to get back to the mathematical side of things.

4. What courses did you take?

Obligated courses:

  • Data Science Regulation and Law
  • Statistics and Methodology
  • Machine Learning

Research skill courses:

  • Big Data
  • Programming with R

Optional courses (these courses belonged to my track):

  • Anlysis of Customer Data
  • Computational Statistics

5. Did you have to get yourself a room in Tilburg for this master?

I already moved to Tilburg for my HBO studies, so by now I have been living in Tilburg for several years.

6. Did you like the master?

I like the master very much. It is very nice and interesting that you learn about different aspects of Data Science. You learn how to program, of course, but you also learn different theories or about laws and privacy regulation

7. Was it difficult to switch from your bachelor to your master?

The switch from CIW to this master was tough. It is not necessarily expected that you already have a lot of prior knowledge, but if you don’t you have to keep up with everything really well. Especially in the first weeks the pace is very high. If you already have some knowledge of programming it will certainly help you.

8. Did you know anyone else who was also taking this master?

I did get to know a number of people through Flow, and my old roommate is following the same master’s program. You notice that things are easier when you can study together or talk about your studies and subjects. Unfortunately, this was more difficult last semester because of the current Corona situation.
