Commissioner InFlow Interview

1. Who are you?
Hi, my name is Caspar Grielen, and I am a master student following the New Media Design track within Communication and Information Sciences. I have been an active member and part of Flow for about a year now and have been really enjoying the vibe in the study association and the people of course!
2. Even though a lot of people may already know the InFlow committee, could you maybe explain what the committee does?
The InFlow committee is responsible for making the ‘InFlow’ newsletter on a monthly basis. In this Newsletter we give information about upcoming activities, updates from the daily board, movie recommendations, flowto’s of the month, etc. Additionally, we release the semester magazine 'Flowzine,' in which we choose a theme and just create a small magazine with a release event to celebrate the new release. In this magazine we have various content, such as poetry, columns, quizzes, some fun other things, etc.
3. Can you give us a small inside of what goes into creating the InFlows and Flowzines?
Creating the ‘InFlow’ and ‘Flowzine’, of course, require an amazing committee, and it cannot be done without them. Just having 7 people who can continuously come up with new and exiting ideas and keeping each other sharp is essential. By doing a (bi-)weekly meeting, we try to give our members a complete overview of everything that is happening each month with the ‘InFlow’, and every semester a new interesting and fun ‘Flowzine’ to relax with and just have fun with!
4. What made you excited to become commissioner of the InFlow Committee?
Prior before doing the master study, i studies graphic and spatial design at an art and design academy and worked for two years as a online design specialist. These jobs have shaped my love for graphic design and creating digital/physical media. In my academic career, this kind of moved to the background, and I really was looking forward to picking it back up again with others to create something that Flow could be really proud of!
5. Some people might already know the InFlow Committee from previous years. Is there anything the InFlow Committee is doing differently from last year?
We are definitely trying to shake some stuff up when it comes to interactive elements inthe ‘InFlow’ and "Flowzine.' We have a couple of great ideas right now, and without teasing to much it has something to do with: “scanning long codes somewhere that resembles waves”. I cannot really say more than that but I’m really looking forward to showing you guys what we are working on.
6. What is it like to be a commissioner for your committee so far?
I really enjoy being commissioner for the committee so far. Being the one who helps everyone stay on track, being there when help is needed, and having the overview and seeing how everything comes together is really inspiring. It might be a weird thing to say, but it is kind of like recovering my faith in people. Seeing how we as a committee can create something so nice is just really nice and healing in a way.
7. What are you most passionate or excited about for your committee?
This new committee is full of great ideas. During the interviews with the new members, this already came up quite often. I love how everyone has their own passions about what type of articles they would like to write and to combine that with my passions for designing. This combination will definitely help us create an amazing flowzine that will be inspirational for all the members.
8. What movie or show would best describe your committee, and why?
I think the best movie or show that would describe us is ‘Sound of Music.' Our committee is all about frolicking in the field together and just creating a great vibe together. We love to laugh together and have amazing times. We are also a bit chaotic and hard to manage, but I feel like that is part of how to create something amazing. Be structured but also a little bit chaotic to shake things up
9. If you didn't have to look at time or money, what would you want to organize?
I would love to organize a whole brand event. Something that puts FLOW on the map as one of the most fun and best study associations in the Netherlands. With great designs, b-rolls, branding, etc. Fun activities, amazing magazines with nice theming, fun articles, great vibes overall.
10. If your committee had a warning label, what would it say?
I think if our committee had a warning label, it would be something like, "Careful, passion is brewing.” This is because our committee is really passionate about what we want, but it's also quite chaotic, and sometimes it's hard to plan meetings. So the brewing is taking place, but it is slow until it explodes into a colorful fest.
