Interview Yara

Activities Commissioner Interview

1. Who are you, and what does your committee do?

My name is Yara, I am 18 years old, and I am an enthusiastic new Flow member. I love animals, which is why I work in a restaurant at a zoo. On the 1st of March, I will be moving to Tilburg! This is an adventure I am really looking forward to. I will finally have my own space and will be able to attend almost every Flow activity. I will miss my cat, Snoes, who can do tricks, but I will visit her often.

The Activities Committee organizes a variety of non-alcohol-related activities. So far, we have organized a Murder Mystery Night, the yearly activity: Flow on Ice, and the Family Day!

2. What makes you excited to be commissioner of the Activities Committee?

As this is my first year at Flow, I am excited about everything. It is all new to me! I am happy to take on this responsibility, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a commissioner in my first year. I especially enjoy being creative, which makes this committee perfect for me, and I see it as a fun challenge to come up with original activities together with my committee. Also, I am eager to bring my energy and organizational skills to make sure events run smoothly. I love seeing people enjoy themselves, so I cannot wait to plan activities that everyone will remember, and look forward to meeting new people!

3. Some people might know the Activities Committee from previous years already. Is there anything the committee is doing differently from last year?

We always try to be original with the activities we organize. Many Flow members have been around for a while and have already done lots of similar events, so we like coming up with fresh and fun ideas that people have not experienced yet. One of the highlights this year was bringing back Family Day, which had not happened in, I think, five years! It is actually our biggest activity this year, and it was so exciting to bring it back and see everyone enjoy it. Moments like that really make all the planning and hard work worth it. It is amazing to see people connecting, having fun and making memories together. We also want to organize more active activities this year, since we have seen they attract more people and are a lot of fun. I cannot wait to keep coming up with more creative activities for everyone to enjoy!

4. What is it like to be a commissioner for your committee so far?

So far, being the Activities commissioner definitely took some time to adjust to, but in the best way possible. In the beginning, I really had to grow into the role, but it helped me become more confident and more comfortable making decisions for the committee. I have learned that sometimes you just have to trust your judgment and go for it.

Honestly, above all, it is just so much fun! Our committee is super 'gezellig' (fun), as they would say in Dutch. There is such a nice balance between working hard on organizing great activities and just enjoying the process together. We can be productive and focused, but we also laugh a lot and have a great time as a team. That combination really makes the whole experience special.

5. What are you most passionate or excited about for your committee for the upcoming semester?

I am really excited about what we have planned for the upcoming semester. Spoiler alert: We are organizing an arcade evening where we will visit a game hall, and I think it is going to be a really fun night; playing games together and seeing who’s the most competitive or fanatic! I am also looking forward to everything that comes after, which is not set in stone yet, but we already have so many ideas! It is exciting to think about turning those ideas into actual activities and creating fun experiences for everyone!

6. What movie or show would best describe your committee, and why?

A movie that could describe our committee quite well is “The Avengers”. We really are like a super team. Everyone is different and brings their own unique strengths to the table. Sometimes that makes things a little chaotic, but when it really matters, we come together, focus and get things done. There is a great balance between our different personalities, and that reflects exactly how our committee works.

What I love most is that even when things get busy or challenging, we still have a lot of fun together. We support each other, laugh a lot and celebrate our successes, which makes being part of this committee so enjoyable and fulfilling.

7. If you did not have to look at time or money, what would you want to organize?

I would love to organize a themed fair for all of Tilburg University’s study associations! There could be exciting attractions to try and plenty of free food and drinks, just like at a classic American fair. Think of popcorn, hot dog stands, cotton candy and more. We could also have fun games and challenges, like shooting games or water activities, where people can win prizes. Of course, we would have a photo booth, so people could take fun pictures and remember the day!

I think it would be a fantastic way to bring students from all associations together, have lots of laughs and make unforgettable memories. The fair could be colorful, energetic, and full of surprises and everything would be completely free, so everyone can just enjoy themselves and leave with a big smile!
